Why Can We Only Order Non-Licensed Items from McKesson?

McKesson prioritizes compliance and safety in the distribution of medications, especially when it comes to controlled substances and other licensed items such as testosterone. To ensure that these products are dispensed responsibly, McKesson requires specific documentation regarding DEA (Drug Enforcement Administration) or prescriptive authority. Here’s what you need to know about this process:

Why Documentation is Necessary

Controlled substances and certain medications are subject to strict regulations to prevent misuse and ensure they are prescribed and dispensed safely. McKesson must verify that the healthcare provider has the appropriate credentials to prescribe these items. Without this verification, your account will not yet be able to order licensed items.

What Constitutes as a "Licensed Item"?

A few examples of licensed items are as follows:

Commercial nutrients: Toradol, Zofran, Magnesium Chloride, Potassium, Calcium, Folic Acid, Bacteriostatic Water

Fluids: (Normal Saline IV Bags, Lactated Ringers, Sterile Water

What Happens If Documentation is Missing?

If your account is restricted, you will not be able to access licensed items until the necessary DEA or prescriptive authority documentation is provided and verified. This is a precautionary measure to protect both patients and healthcare providers. During this period, you can still order non-licensed items to meet your patients' needs.

Escalation Process

If you find that your account is restricted due to missing documentation, rest assured our team will follow up with McKesson to escalate the situation and facilitate the addition of the required credentials. This process can take some time, but we are committed to resolving it as quickly as possible.

Special Considerations for RNs and PAs

It’s important to note that if your provider is a Registered Nurse (RN) or a Physician Assistant (PA) without the necessary prescriptive authority, similar restrictions will apply. In such cases, we recommend checking with the provider to ensure they have the appropriate credentials for the items you wish to order.

Conclusion

We understand that these restrictions can be inconvenient, but they are in place to ensure compliance with regulations and to promote patient safety.
